Are Steel Filing Cabinets Fireproof?
Mar 15, 2018

Fire resistant cabinets have a layer of inflammable insulation between the interior of the cabinet and the exterior. This insulation absorbs the thermal energy produced by the fire, slowing the transfer of heat between the interior and exterior of the cabinet. Eventually, the interior temperature will climb high enough for combustion to occur. Ideally, the fire will be extinguished before this happens.

There are filing cabinets that are designed to protect the contents in the event of fire. Most of them have a steel shell, and are lined with some type of fire resistant material with good insulating qualities that keep the contents safe for a limited time. Not all steel filing cabinets are designed to this way. Some are simply a steel shell and while steel does not readily burn, it does conduct heat very well.

whether or not they were going to be able to stay in business depended on what in their fire rated filing cabinets survived. This was a small business in the days where almost everything was on paper and anything that was stored electronically was not backed up off site, but instead was backed up daily on some storage media that was locked in one of those cabinets. When they opened the cabinets most of the paperwork was scorched but readable. Their electronic records also survived.
